Acid phosphatase is an enzyme found in several tissues, with high concentrations in the prostate gland. Measuring its total level in blood is one of the older laboratory tests in medicine, used for decades in the evaluation of prostate disease.

In modern practice, PSA has largely taken over as the first-line prostate blood test, and acid phosphatase is ordered much less often — usually in specific situations where the treating doctor wants it alongside other investigations.
