Understanding BENCE JONES PROTEIN, URINE, QUALITATIVE
Bence Jones proteins are small protein fragments called free light chains. They are produced in excess by abnormal plasma cells and, being small, pass from the blood into the urine — where this test detects them.
The test is part of the classic workup for multiple myeloma and related plasma-cell disorders. A positive result does not by itself diagnose myeloma, but it is an important clue that directs further testing, such as serum protein electrophoresis and serum free light chain assays.
