The thyroid profile measures the thyroid hormones T3 and T4 together with TSH — the pituitary hormone that controls the thyroid gland. Read as a pattern, these three values show whether the thyroid is working normally, underactive (hypothyroidism) or overactive (hyperthyroidism).

Thyroid problems are common, especially in women, and their symptoms — weight change, fatigue, hair fall, irregular periods, palpitations — overlap with everyday complaints. This test is usually how the question gets settled.

When do doctors advise this test?

• Unexplained weight gain or loss, fatigue, hair fall or feeling unusually cold or hot
• Irregular periods, fertility evaluation or pregnancy planning and pregnancy care
• Palpitations, tremors, anxiety or, conversely, slowness and low mood under evaluation
• Monitoring known thyroid disease and adjusting medicine dose, typically as advised every few months

Preparation & the sample

No fasting is strictly required, but a morning sample is commonly preferred because TSH naturally varies through the day. If you already take thyroid medicine, doctors usually advise giving the sample before the day's dose — follow your own doctor's instruction, and mention any biotin (hair/skin) supplements, which can distort results.
