The Uric Acid test measures the level of uric acid in the blood — a waste product formed when the body breaks down purines from food and from its own cells. Healthy kidneys filter it out, but when production is high or excretion is low, uric acid builds up and can crystallise in joints and tissues.

It is best known for gout, the painful arthritis of the big toe and other joints, but doctors also track uric acid in kidney stone evaluation and in metabolic workups. The test runs on serum by the uricase method.
