The routine urine examination — written as Urine R/E — checks your urine in three ways: physical (colour and clarity), chemical (a dipstick strip that detects protein, glucose, blood and other markers), and microscopic (cells, crystals, bacteria and casts seen under the microscope). Together they give a quick, inexpensive window into kidney function, urinary tract health and even blood-sugar control.

Doctors order it so frequently because urine carries away exactly what the kidneys filter out of the blood. Protein or blood in the urine can flag kidney or bladder trouble; glucose spilling into urine can point to high blood sugar; white cells and bacteria suggest infection. It is a screening test — an abnormal finding usually leads to more specific follow-up tests rather than a final diagnosis on its own.

When do doctors advise this test?

Preparation & the sample

No fasting is needed. Collect the first urine you pass in the morning — it is the most concentrated and best for detecting small abnormalities — in the sterile screw-capped container provided. Pass a little urine first, then collect the middle portion of the stream (the 'midstream' sample), which reduces contamination.
